今日１２月１３日は、聖ルシア祭。
スウェーデンの公共テレビ局 SVT による番組 Luciamorgon（ルシアの朝）では、毎年どこかの街の地元コーラス隊による歌声と静謐で美しい夜明けからの風景を楽しむことができます。思わず拍手を送りたくなる子どもたちのかわいらしい声や姿も欠かせません。
今年の場所に選ばれたのは、ゴットランド島のVisby。まだ訪れたことがないのに街の名前に聞き覚えがあるのは、映画『魔女の宅急便』に描かれた街の下敷きになった場所として有名な地名だからでした。
Today is St. Lucia Day.
The public Swedish television broadcaster SVT’s program, Luciamorgon, was broadcast from Visby on the island of Gotland this year. The reason I am familiar with the name itself, even though I have never visited, is because it is widely known as a key inspiration for the town depicted in the movie “Kiki’s Delivery Service”🧹
☝︎上の写真は今回の旅から先日持ち帰ったパンのオーナメントです。見つけたとき、ふいに『魔女の宅急便』の主人公キキが住み込みで働く「グーチョキパン屋」が思い浮かびました。樹脂製と思い込んでいましたが、すこーしﾎﾟﾛﾎﾟﾛ欠けたところから察するにどうやら堅くなった実物のよう。
不思議に思いアンナさんに尋ねると、「Skådebröd（お供えのパン）と呼ばれているわ。焼いて乾燥させるの、むかし私も妹と一緒につくっていたのよ」と教えてくれました。
When I looked at this, I immediately thought of Guchoki Bakery, the bakery where Kiki, the protagonist of “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” works and lives. I initially thought it was made of resin, but it appears to be a hardened, actual piece of bread. So as I asked Anna about it, she told me, “They are called Skådebröd (Show Bread or Offering Bread). We bake and dry them, and I used to make them with my sister when we were younger.”
このような三つ編みの輪は古くから麦わらを用いて作られることも多く、永遠性や循環といった意味合いが込められています。かたちは違えど、稲わらで作る日本のしめ縄と共通点がいくつも見出せますね。
Braided rings (such as the Treflätad halmring) traditionally were crafted using straw since ancient times, embodying meanings like eternity and circulation. Although the shapes differ, we can find many commonalities with Japanese Shimenawa (sacred straw rope) made from rice straw 🌾
こちらはアンナさんとロルフさんが暮らすおうちの窓辺のようすです。クリスマスの季節にこうして大きな星をひとつずつ窓辺に飾るのは、スウェーデンで広まった習慣だそう。
Anna told me that displaying large stars like this, one by one, on the windowsill during the Christmas season is a tradition that has become widespread in Sweden 🎄
こちらも彼女による選曲、タイトルは「冬の暗闇はかくも暗い」。真冬の暗闇と寒さのなかに訪れる、光と希望を象徴する伝統的な曲なので、聖ルシア祭にはかならず歌われていますね🕯️☆
